CHAPTER 38

“I’m not going.”

“May I know why?”

“I am not going. At least not in this dress.” She didn’t want to insult Misty, that was the last thing she wanted, but … it just didn’t do it for her. It wasn’t really a dress, but two pieces. A turquoise lace top and a skirt the fell just above her knees of the same colour. It was beautiful.

“I don’t understand you.” Ari was looking at her, trying to comprehend.

“I look fat …” she stopped and rephrased “It doesn’t suit me. And, my arms, they’re fat. I … I’m not going. I think I’d rather stay. Besides, look at my face, it’s full of pimples and scars. No makeup will cover it.” She was looking in the mirror now.

She tried pulling her skirt up so that she could hide her belly, but when she lifted it, her legs became very exposed, almost showing her ass. She pulled it lower again. She turned to one side and then to the other. Watching the fat in her belly and then on her arm.

She contracted her belly.

She straightened her spine.

Relaxed.

The thunder tattoo definitely did not go well with the delicacy of the dress.

She had lost a little weight because of the training, but it was still not enough.

The top was not in place and it exposed her back acne.

She looked once more.

Turned.

Rolled.

She stopped and watched.

“No. I think I’ll stay.” She looked at Ari who was wearing a red dress. She looked great in it. “I want to have your body. Oh, look at you. You’re flawless. Everyone here is, I’m the fucking ugly duckling. No one’s going to miss me. You’re going to live your diplomatic life and the others are going to start talking about things,” she said, sitting in bed next to Ari, throwing herself backwards.

“You are ridiculous, Rosélina.” Ari watched her for a while without saying anything and then stood up. “Come here,” she said, calling Rosé to her side in front of the mirror. Rosé obeyed her. “Look at my reflection.” In the blink of an eye a fat woman appeared in Ari’s place. “That was me. Years ago, they called me Pinky Ball.” They exchanged gazes in the mirror. “I used to look in the mirror and cry. I’d scratch my fat belly until it bled.” A shy smile lingered on her lips. “I was a child. By that age the world had already taught me to hate myself.” The reflection disappeared, and Ari sat back in bed.

“One day my mother came into the room and saw all my body scratches and said I couldn’t go on like that, crying and scratching it. As much as I wanted that, my body wouldn’t change. ‘The time you spend crying and weeping, you could be doing something to change it if it bothers you so much. Or, you can accept yourself the way you are and fuck people and society. The decision is yours, but no matter what you choose, you will have to learn to love it.
